1If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears
among you and announces to you a miraculous sign or wonder, 2 and if
the sign or wonder of which he has spoken takes place, and he says, "Let
us follow other gods" (gods you have not known) "and let us
worship them," 3 you must not listen to the words of
that prophet or dreamer. The LORD your God is testing you to find out whether
you love him with all your heart and with all your soul. (Deut. 13:1-4)
1But there were also false prophets among the people,
just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce
destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them--bringing
swift destruction on themselves. 2Many will follow their shameful
ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. 3In their greed
these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their
condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not
been sleeping. 4For if God did not spare angels when they sinned,
but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held
for judgment; 5if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought
the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of
righteousness, and seven others; 6if he condemned the cities of
Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what
is going to happen to the ungodly; 7and if he rescued Lot, a
righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men 8(for
that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his
righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)-- 9if this is
so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the
unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment. 10This
is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the sinful nature
and despise authority. 11Bold and arrogant, these men are not afraid
to slander celestial beings; yet even angels, although they are stronger and
more powerful, do not bring slanderous accusations against such beings in the
presence of the Lord. 12But these men blaspheme in matters they do
not understand. They are like brute beasts, creatures of instinct, born only to
be caught and destroyed, and like beasts they too will perish. 13They
will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. Their idea of pleasure
is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in
their pleasures while they feast with you. 14With eyes full of
adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce the unstable; they are experts
in greed--an accursed brood! 15They have left the straight way and
wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Beor, who loved the wages of
wickedness. 16But he was rebuked for his wrongdoing by a donkey--a
beast without speech--who spoke with a man's voice and restrained the prophet's
madness. 17These men are springs without water and mists driven by a
storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them. 18For they mouth
empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of sinful human
nature, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. 19They
promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity--for a
man is a slave to whatever has mastered him. 20If they have escaped
the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are
again entangled in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they
were at the beginning. 21It would have been better for them not to
have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn
their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. 22Of
them the proverbs are true: "A dog returns to its vomit," and,
"A sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud." (2 Peter
2)
17They keep saying to those who despise me, 'The LORD says: You
will have peace.' And to all who follow the stubbornness of their hearts
they say, 'No harm will come to you.' 18But which of them has
stood in the council of the LORD to see or to hear his word? Who has listened
and heard his word? 19See, the storm of the LORD will burst out in
wrath, a whirlwind swirling down on the heads of the wicked. 20The
anger of the LORD will not turn back until he fully accomplishes the purposes
of his heart. In days to come you will understand it clearly. (Jeremiah
23:17-20)
28Let these false prophets tell their dreams, but let my
true messengers faithfully proclaim my every word. There is a difference between chaff and wheat! 29Does
not my word burn like fire?" asks the LORD. "Is it not like a mighty
hammer that smashes rock to pieces? (Jeremiah 23:28-29)
33Suppose one of the people or one of the prophets or
priests asks you, ‘What prophecy has the LORD burdened you with now?’ You
must reply, ‘You are the burden! The LORD says he will abandon you!’ 34If
any prophet, priest, or anyone else says, `I have a burden from the LORD,' I
will punish that person along with his entire family. 35You should
keep asking each other, `What is the LORD's answer?' or `What is the LORD
saying?' 36But stop using this phrase, `burden from the LORD.' For
people are using it to give authority to their own ideas, turning upside down
the words of our God, the living God, the LORD Almighty. 37"This
is what you should say to the prophets: `What is the LORD's answer?' or `What
is the LORD saying?' 38But suppose they respond, `This is a burden
from the LORD!' Then you should say, `This is what the LORD says: Because you
have used this phrase, "burden from the LORD," even though I warned you
not to use it, 39I will forget you completely. I will expel you from
my presence, along with this city that I gave to you and your ancestors. 40And
I will make you an object of ridicule, and your name will be infamous
throughout the ages. (Jeremiah 33-40)
1Dear friends, do not
believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see
if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in
the world. 2This is the way to find out if they have the Spirit
of God: If a prophet acknowledges that Jesus Christ became a human being,
that person has the Spirit of God. 3If a prophet does not
acknowledge Jesus, that person is not from God. Such a person has the spirit of
the Antichrist. You have heard that he is going to come into the world, and he
is already here. 4But you belong to God, my dear children. You have
already won your fight with these false prophets, because the Spirit who lives
in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world. 5These
people belong to this world, so they speak from the world's viewpoint, and the
world listens to them. 6But we belong to God; that is why those
who know God listen to us. If they do not belong to God, they do not listen
to us. That is how we know if someone has the Spirit of truth or the spirit
of deception. (1 John 4:1-6)
15Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in
sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16By
their fruit you will recognize them. Grapes are not gathered from thorn
bushes, nor figs from thistles, are they? 17Likewise every good
tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18A good tree
cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. (Matthew
7:15-18)
4Jesus told them, Don't let anyone mislead you. 5For
many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ.’ They will lead many
astray. 6And wars will break out near and far, but don't
panic. Yes, these things must come, but the end won't follow immediately. 7The
nations and kingdoms will proclaim war against each other, and there will be
famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world. 8But all this
will be only the beginning of the horrors to come. 9Then you will be
arrested, persecuted, and killed. You will be hated all over the world because
of your allegiance to me. 10And many will turn away from me and
betray and hate each other. 11And many false prophets will appear
and will lead many people astray. 12Sin will be rampant everywhere,
and the love of many will grow cold. 13But those who endure to
the end will be saved. 14And the Good News about the Kingdom will be
preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it; and
then, finally, the end will come. (Matthew 24:4-14)
37When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in
Noah's day. 38In those
days before the Flood, the people were enjoying banquets and parties and
weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat. 39People
didn't realize what was going to happen until the Flood came and swept them all
away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes. (Matthew
24:37-39)
